Valuable points banked at Ricard by Phil Hanson but disappointed with result

“It’s a week since the opening European Le Mans Series round at Paul Ricard and I still feel disappointed with the result. The #22 Ligier had strong race pace but I lost too much time during my first stints in the LMP2 traffic and maybe it’s an element that I need to work on.

“I had found myself boxed in at the start and dropped places and once you lose 30 seconds in a stint to the leader, it’s impossible to claw back if they don’t have a problem. Paul and I were on the leaders pace later in the race but unfortunately the gap by that stage was too big. The car had good balance and we made no mistakes.

“We did a decent job to get back up to fifth place and maintain that position. It was a massive shame that Paul got a puncture with just five minutes to go that dropped us to an eventual sixth place finish. It’s not a bad start to the season, eight points in the bank, and a better result than 12th there last year. But we also know the first two tracks on the ELMS calendar are our weakest tracks for the Ligier compared to the ORECA in terms of top-speed.

“So we will see what we can manage at Monza next month but we’ll get in some testing at Aragon and useful mileage beforehand. Sixth place wasn’t a disaster but there is definitely room for improvement on all fronts.”
